History of the Newfoundland

The Newfoundland can search it's roots back to the Great Pyrenees, dogs that were brought to the coast of Newfoundland by the Basque fisherman and also from a "french hound" (probably the Boarhound). All agree that this magnificent dog originated in Newfoundland  and that his ancestors were undoubtedly brought there by fisherman from the European continent.

The Newfoundland is a large dog, with size and strength, and he has a heavy coat to protect him from the long winters and the icy waters surrounding his native land. His feet are large, strong, and webbed so that he might travel easily over marshes and shores. At the present time, the Newfoundland is admired and bred in many countries including, besides his native land, England, France, Holland, Germany, Australia, Italy, Canada, and the United States.

This dog is the true working dog, tolling equally as well on land as on water. Canine stories tell us that brave Newfoundland's have rescued men and women from watery graves; helped swim life lines to shipwreck victims, and of the saving of children who have fallen into deep water. Although he is a superior water dog, the Newfoundland has been used  and is still being used in Newfoundland and Labrador as a true working dog, dragging carts, or more often carrying burdens as a pack horse. In order to perform these tasks, the Newfoundland must be a large dog with powerful hindquarters, a heavy coat, and above all he must have the intelligence, the loyalty, and the sweetness to help him master his necessary tasks.
